My Pregnancy Journey - Part 10

thailand coconut from NTUC - my 1st at 32 weeks
experienced mummies advised to start drinking coconut water once every week, as early as 32 weeks. this practice can be increased to 2-3 times a week upon full term of 37 weeks onwards. it is believed that baby would be physically "cleaner" at birth following the routine. chinese deem coconut water to be cooling and thus, not to be consumed in earlier trimesters of pregnancy. however, there are reasons why the drink can be a good source of fluid during pregnancy.

Tender coconut water - a natural, nutrient rich isotonic drink.

It is high in electrolytes, chlorides, potassium, and magnesium and has a moderate amount of sugar, sodium and protein. These ingredients help in the growth of the unborn baby in the mother's womb. It is also a good source of dietary fibre, manganese, calcium, riboflavin and vitamin C which accelerates the blood circulation in the mother.

Coconut water helps prevent dehydration and also relieves tiredness and fatigue by replenishing the natural salts lost by the body when you sweat.

There is some evidence that coconut water may help build up immunity, improve kidney function, prevent urinary tract infections (UTI) and lower high blood pressure.

Some mums find that drinking coconut water helps relieve morning sickness, constipation and acidity that are common problems during pregnancy. It helps in cleaning the system.

When you are looking for something other than water to quench your thirst, you can try tender coconut water instead of aerated drinks or packaged fruit juices that may contain preservatives and artificial flavouring. Many of these drinks just add empty calories to your body without any nutrients.

Coconut water is also a good alternative to caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, tea and colas. Try and drink from the young unripe fruit as it boosts the immune system. This water is rich in vitamins and nutrients, which help in improving health.

There are many benefits of drinking coconut water but do keep a few things in mind.
  • Always remember that moderation is the key. Clean, filtered water should always be your main drink. Do not substitute it with coconut water or other drinks at all times.
  • Always pick fresh, clean, green coconuts and make sure they are cut in front of you.
  • Drink the coconut water as soon as the coconut is cut so that it is fresh and nutrient rich. Use a clean straw or pour the coconut water into a clean glass.
  • Skip drinking coconut water if you feel you do not like the taste or if it does not agree with you.
